First it was a
dolphin trainer, then it was an interior designer, then it was wedding planner,
then it was a publicist, and now? Well that is still being determined. While in college, I feel like the question
“what do you want to be when you grow up” is only get increasingly popular. All of
a sudden you’re suppose to pick a major and magically know what you want to
spend the rest of your life doing. It’s
so much pressure! And I know a major doesn’t necessarily dictate what jobs you
will get in the future and prevent you from changing your mind but it’s still
something you’re expected to know by your sophomore year of college. And that's a scary thought.
I know a few things,
I know I love advertising, marketing, graphic design, public relations and
clothes and I know I would love to combine those loves, but do I know exactly
what position I want to be when I grow up? Not. At. All. I commonly get emails
asking what I’m majoring in at Furman. I’m a communications major however I
made room in my schedule to allow for myself to take multiple graphic design
classes in the art department.
The best thing about
attending a liberal arts school is that I get to take numerous classes in all
the departments to cover different general ed requirements we have to have to
graduate. Even though I knew coming into college that I wanted to be a communications
major, it helped me confirm that. It also helped break up my semesters so I
wasn’t taking only com classes every
semester.
Even though I don’t
exactly know what I want to do when I’m older, I know what I’m interested in
and what I love. So, when in doubt try to turn what you love into a
career. Figure out what your favorite classes are and what you are passionate
about. It’s important to remember that your major doesn’t define you. And even
if you figure out what you’re passionate about after college I don’t think you' re ever too old to chase your dreams.
Don’t stress if you
don’t know exactly what you want to be when you grow up. Most likely you’ll
figure it out along the way! Have faith and follow your heart.
Always Remember,
xoxo

I've been through the same struggle! I've finally decided to major in Environmental Engineering, but you wouldn't believe that before that my major was History. It's difficult to pick, but if you take classes that you find interesting, eventually you'll find your path :)

I'm 25 and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, haha! I think my passions continue to evolve with each passing year so while in college explore all your options!

I remember going through that in college, and ended up working in my field and then getting a graduate degree in something totally different. The one cool thing I've learned through meeting people in my professional career of all ages and spots in their journey is that, no matter what you decide now, you can continue to grow and change and morph your career into something else. It's a journey!
