It's all in the numbers…or is it?

10,838. 704. 20. 640. 1,210.

All these numbers are suppose to define me according to society. They are the number of Instagram followers I have or the number of people I’m friends with on Facebook. In today’s society you’re constantly judged by your status on social media.

It’s all in the numbers.

But that’s not how it should be. We shouldn’t feel like we live for another follower request or that the number of likes we get on a picture defines how popular we are.

I blog purely for fun. I did it for myself as a way to document my college memories and post about things that interested me along the way. Never in a million years did I think my blog would turn into what it has today. I have entered into a world where the number of followers on Instagram defines your success and it seems there’s a constant competition to see who can get the most.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t get excited with I hit the 1K mark, or the 5K or 10K mark. But I think in today’s society we have to be cautious of letting the number of followers define our success. I blog because I love it, and I love connecting with people who have similar interests as me, not because of the number of followers  I have.

It’s easy to get wrapped up with stupid statistics that society says is important. While I tend to be a competitive person in some things, I have to remind myself about what the important things in life are. Is my life really going to be that much different with 12,000 followers vs. 10,000?

What matters is that you’re loving what you’re doing and you’re having fun doing it. So while it might “all be in the numbers” when you’re playing a game of poker, when it comes to life, you’re more than just a number.

  1. I just started my blog and for now I don't even look at numbers because I just started, but I fear that I will force myself to blog content that I don't genuinely like for the sake of gaining followers in the future. This was a great post, thank you!

  2. Thanks for being so awesome and writing a post like this for fellow bloggers/followers who need this :)
I have to remind myself daily that I'm worth more than just a number.

  3. Shannon,

I absolutely love your perspective. As a new blogger it's so easy to get mixed up and feel bad about not having thousands of views immediately and it can be really discouraging. It's so much more than the numbers though, it's just easy to forget that.
