I think we can all agree that the best part of the back to school season is the new school supplies. Well brace yourself because school supplies (backpacks in particular) just got even better.
Madeline is a rising high school senior from Cincinnati who redefined what summer “vacation” means for everyone. She used her summer vacation to start her own company and redefine back to school backpacks for girls with a little help from her business partner aka mom!
Madeline sent me one of the backpacks and I can’t rave more about it. It’s square shape provides so much space and it’s able to sit on the ground without tipping over! It even has a built in laptop compartment! All the color combinations are perfect and you really can’t go wrong with any of her backpacks! *Plus, they're made in America!!!!!!!*
I took a little step back in time and ventured back to my high school to take these pictures! While I won’t be on campus in fall since I’m studying abroad I can’t wait to sport this backpack all over the Furman campus in the spring!
I asked Madeline a few questions for a new series I hope to start called YGG (You Go Girl), about her business and what it was like to start a company at such a young age!
Your backpacks are adorable! Tell us how you came up with the idea of designing a new backpack! Is this something you have wanted to do for a while now?
I was tired of using a camping backpack for school since my freshman year. It seemed like such a simple idea to have a backpack that’s primary purpose is for school and is stylish. It didn’t exist in the market. So, I designed a cute, yet functional backpack with great classic colors and a little sparkle.
Where did your inspiration come from when you were designing them?
I’m one of those girls that loves clothing. I am inspired by classic style with modern touches. I wanted a backpack that could be used as a great accessory to my outfit, not an eye-sore.
What’s your goal for the company? Anything else in the works?
Our goal is to expand Madeline & Company, not to be known just as a backpack company. We really have some great clothing pieces we hope to introduce around the holidays.
What was the most difficult part of the whole process?
There are so many small details and so much paperwork; it tends to get in the way of the fun stuff! However, it just takes just one kind email from a customer, and it’s all worth it! I’m so happy to know that people love the backpacks as much as I do! I love hearing that others have also searched for a backpack similar to the one I have designed.
(All of the backpacks have inspirational sayings on the back! Probably one of my favorite parts!)
Now for the fun questions:
If you could have a picnic with anyone (dead or alive) who would you chose?
Tory Burch! She has contributed so much to the world of fashion. She seems like such a genuine person and has the best classic meets modern style! Also, Taylor Swift would be extremely entertaining and fun. Who wouldn’t want to have lunch with her?
How many times do you press the snooze button in the morning?
One too many times! I am not the biggest morning person, so I hit the snooze button at least twice.
Favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor (it says a lot about a person) :)
I’m probably one of the most indecisive people you will meet, so this was a hard question to answer! :) It would have to be a toss up between Americone Dream, Cheesecake Brownie, or Mint Chocolate Cookie!
A beach house in the Hamptons! Picture cedar shingles, blue hydrangeas, and navy stripes with a view of the ocean. Does it get any better than that?
I think Paris would be so fun! I could just picture a day sight seeing and eating macrons, visiting the Eiffel Tower, and shopping in all the little stores.
Thanks so much Madeline! You're such an inspiration and keep up the amazing work!
