FriYAY + National Stripes Day!

Happy National Stripes Day! 

I think stripes is the most common pattern in my wardrobe and typically they are navy and white. It's an obsession really and I'm currently working on expanding my color palette. 

This week felt like a week long celebration! My good friend had her birthday on Tuesday and then my roommate's birthday was on Wednesday! This weekend the celebration continues as we have formal Saturday night and then another good friend's birthday on Sunday. LOTS of birthdays this time of year!

I also came to the terrifying realization this week that this past week was my last full week of school as an undergrad. CRAZY. Next week we have a school wide holiday on Tuesday as a day dedicated to everyone presenting their research, the following 2 weeks easter cuts into, and then we get into exams. Where did Spring semester go?!

Tips For Making A Fraternity Cooler

Tis the season for fraternity formals...and you know what that means...


Mistakenly, I was excited about making my first cooler freshman year. What innocent little 18-year-old Shannon didn't know was just how time-consuming they really are. 

I've gone with Emory to his formal in Charleston since freshman year! I made one for him our freshman and sophomore year, but decided that 2 was enough (I mean seriously what is any boy going to do with 4 coolers?!) so I didn't make one last year or this year. Emory didn't want me to have to worry about making another two when they take up so much time and he already had two that he liked!

I went into the whole process freshman year blind, completely clueless about where to start. I am far from an artistic person, so I was really intimidated when I scrolled through Pinterest searching for ideas. After making two and helping friends make endless amounts of coolers, I have learned some useful tips and tricks that I hopefully make the whole process less scary. 

1. Buy A Rolling Cooler

From my experience it's so much more convenient to have a cooler on wheels. The coolers that don't have handles may have better painting space, but when it's filled with ice and drinks no one wants to have to treck it from the car to the beach. 

2. Do Design Research

My research mostly consisted of searching through Pinterest. I suggest making a secret board that you can pin any coolers/ graphics you see that you think you might want to incorporate in your design. Most of my ideas came from other coolers so it was helpful to see so many examples. Once I thought I had enough inspiration I planned out what I wanted on the 4 sides and top and wrote/ drew it out. 

3. Sand Your Cooler

I sanded my cooler with a small handheld sander just to make all the sides smooth and easier to paint. Sand each side until it's smooth and then wipe each side off with a wet paper towel or washcloth. 

Note: I decided not to spackle my cooler. Many girls will fill in the little logos and dips in the cooler so it's a smooth surface to paint. I decided not to and just paint over them instead (ex. you can still see the igloo logo on the side of the top cooler of the picture). 

4. Use Sharpies

Sharpies are your best friend. For almost all the small details, outlines, and text I used Sharpie. It so much easier to use than paint and it make the designs sharp and clean. I found that it also applies really well over the acrylic paint!

5. Don't Be Afraid to Trace

Instead of using tracing paper I would frequently cut the picture or shape I wanted out, cut it out, and then traced it onto the cooler with pencil. I did use tracing paper in a few situations but I found that cutting the shape out was easier. 

6. Don't Feel Like You Have To Pain Every Inch

I decided not to paint the whole sides of the coolers and instead used the white strip that goes around the cooler to write a fun song lyric. It was less painting, wrapped all the way around the cooler, and added a little personal touch!

7. Use Connectors

To avoid an ugly line where your two side meet on both coolers I painted different things between the sides so you coudln't see the seam. On one cooler I did golf balls and bow ties and on my other I used whales!

7. Use Mod Podge and Sealant

Before I used the spray sealant, I mod podged the whole thing with a huge paint brush. I did this for my second cooler and it held up so much better than the first one I made when I just used the spray sealant. Make sure you let the spray dry for at least 12 hours to make sure it's 100% dry. I applied multiple layers of sealant until my can was empty to protect the project ! I've seen girls make master pieces, not seal them, and they get destroyed in one weekend. 

I must also add as a disclaimer, that I have some very creative friends that helped contribute when I got frustrated! So thankful they turned out so great!!

Prom Dresses!

When I was studying abroad in Italy, I frequently tutored local high school students with their English. They often times just wanted to practice their conversation skills so I would just sit and chat with them. The girls always had tons of questions about what American high school was really like. They watch all the American movies and tv shows and had this idealistic, unrealistic idea of American high school. They asked me about Friday night football games, lockers, and the most talked about subject?


One group of girls told me it was their dream to attend an American prom. They asked me if people really took limos and had the most magical night of their lives. It was hard not to giggle because while prom is often times fun, it's typically far from the best night of your life. When I was in high school, I felt like there was always inevitable drama surrounding who was going in what group, who would ask who, more importantly how they were going to ask (will it be insta worthy?!), what time we should take pictures, where we should take pictures, and where we would eat dinner. SO MUCH TO ORGANIZE. 

Either way, Prom is a fun night and my favorite part was always getting dressed up. I typically always go with a short dress because standing at only 5'1 I feel like I get swallowed up in a long dress. Here were my favorite short dresses I found!

I personally feel as though you should wear whatever you are most comfortable in. My senior year I couldn't find any dresses that I really loved so instead I went with a Lilly dress that I knew I would be able to reuse for other special events down the line. I was comfortable in it and it felt very me.

So many options! If you're hesitant about buying a dress ,I highly suggest renting a dress from Rent the Runway! They have so many options and it's so much more affordable than buying a whole new dress. You can also rent accessories from them if you choose!

If you're in college, I did a post last week about sorority/ fraternity dresses. At my school at least I feel like our formals are slightly less casual than prom. My formal is this Saturday (hint hint: the dress I'll be wearing was included in this roundup) and then Emory's formal in Charleston is the following weekend!

FriYAY + Columbia Meet Up!!


I swear it was literally Monday 2 hours ago. I need time to slow down. I don't know what it is about spring semester that makes time goes by 10x faster than normal. The weather was glorious for a majority of the week and it was nice to spend some extra time outside. I went on a short hike near campus on Sunday and then got to take a fun study break on Monday to go on a bike ride. 

The other highlight of the week was getting my cap and gown! The idea of graduation is getting more and more real every day as everyone is slowly starting to make decisions about next year and we continuously receive emails about graduation details. I'm not quite ready for you May 6th! Mostly because I don't have a dress

This weekend I am taking a quick trip down the road to Columbia to do a fun promotional event with Pink Sorbet, Columbia's Lilly's signature store. I'll be there this Saturday (the 25th) from about 10:30-2 so if you live in the area PLEASE stop by, shop the new Lilly collection, and hang out! 

Emory is going to an accepted student's day for the USC law school so it worked out perfectly that we'll get to drive down together.

Formal Dresses

Yesterday when I was driving back from class I looked down and the car said it was 86 out! I have no idea where this warm spell came from, but knowing the recent weather pattern it will be snowing next week (we can only hope not). For now, I'm enjoying this heat and breaking out all my spring clothes. I know I'm probably jinxing it by saying this, but I am hoping that since Monday was the first day of Spring the warmth will be here to stay!

One of my favorite sorority events of the year is spring formal. This year it's pretty early and rapidly approaching. We are now just two weeks away from the big event and I've been so busy I've honestly neglected looking for a dress. On top of formal now being just a week and a half away, Emory's formal in Charleston is the weekend immediately following so I really need to get on the ball and find a new dress(es).   

I know a lot of people have formals and proms coming up so I thought I would gather up some formal dresses that caught my eye when I was looking! I'm going to be doing another post about prom dresses next week so be on the lookout for that too!

First Day of Spring! YIPPEE


Now if only the weather would match....

Spring has always been my favorite season. Despite my allergies commonly making me feel like death when everything is blooming, I love the pastel colors, the infinite amount of flowers, and how everyone starts emerging from their winter hibernation (I feel like everyone is so cooped up during the winter!). 

To celebrate the day I wanted to round up my favorite Lilly pieces right now! I'm ready to go on a shopping spree with all these new warm weather collections coming out.

Well friends, we made it through another week. 

I was worried this week was going to be rough coming back from spring break, but surprisingly it really flew by. I had a big french test on Wednesday that took up a majority of the beginning of my week and then after the test I spent a lot of time catching up on little things and getting organized. There's always something, am I right people?! 

Unfortunately, I don't have any super exciting plans for the weekend other than relaxing (maybe), hanging out with some friends, and working on a rather large group project that needs to get done. 

The reminders of graduation creeping closer are constant. This week we received emails about purchasing our caps and gowns for the big day. While I'm so ready for summer (like who isn't?!) it's definitely bittersweet that it also means the end of my undergraduate career. My plans for next year are still up in the air as I'm waiting on a few more details to fall into place but a decision (y'all I'm so bad at big decisions) will definitely be made in the next few weeks so keep checking in.

15 Things You Didn't Know About Me

These are my all time favorite posts to read on other blogs. It's no fun reading blogs if you don't know the girl (or boy!) behind the screen. I love getting to know someone deeper than the few facts on their about pages. 

I tried to genuinely think of facts that you most likely wouldn't know about me even if you've been reading for a while. 

Oh and to be completely honest I have a huge french test today so I didn't have time to write a longer post...

1. I hate/ don't eat chocolate. I've never liked it and honestly probably never will. Sometimes I actually wish I liked it because everything is chocolate. I always used to get embarrassed at birthday parties when I was little and wouldn't eat the chocolate cake. 

2. I make my bed religiously every morning. Even if I'm running a little late I won't leave my apartment until my bed it made! 

3. I have a huge obsession with weddings. Not necessarily my own future wedding, but I just love looking at pictures from other couples and reading their story. 

4. I attended a German school for part of my 7th grade year while we lived in Germany. After about 2 months I got so frustrated that I couldn't accurately complete my homework and understand my teachers that I went back to my American school. 

5. I'm a night showerer. I can't go to bed without showering. I like feeling squeaky clean getting into my bed at night, plus it's such a relaxing way to end the day!

6. I frequently order off the kids meal. Yes, I know I'm 21 years old, but I eat pretty small portions and I always feel bad ordering a regular portion when I know I won't be able to eat it all! #noshame

7. My dad is a retired Marine Corps helicopter/ jet pilot and I grew up on military bases all over the world!

8. There is no better show than Gilmore Girls. My obsession started in 7th grade when I had strep throat and I haven't stopped watching since. 

9. I love shopping for almost all types of clothes with the exception of bathing suits. I hate bathing suits and can never find any that fit my unproportioned body. I usually end up ordering tons and keeping one or two that are just "okay."

10. My cookout order (those of you who have a Cookout near you will appreciate this) is usually a vanilla milkshake and fries. Yes I know how incredibly lame that sounds but nothing beats a classic vanilla milkshake and hot salty fries!!

11. I hate being cold. I get cold so easily that even in 85 degree weather you'll still see me carrying a cardigan around. 

12. I have a dog named Cooper. He is a schnoodle, half schnauzer, half poodle. We've had him since I was in 8th grade and we're all convinced that he is my mom's favorite child. 

13. My favorite flavor of ice cream is definitely cotton candy.

14. I love all TLC reality shows. 

15. I'm not a coffee drinker. Instead, I drink a glass of ice tea every morning. I pride myself on making it through college without any coffee!

2017 Spring Break

Welp. It's back to reality. Goodbye 80 degree weather, sun dresses, bike rides, and delicious food and hello snow, bean boots, homework, and dining hall food. RIP Spring Break 2017.

It's officially back to the daily grind and the final push until the end of the semester. I am more than ready for consistent warm weather (I am always so much happier when it's warm out!) and a little break from all things school related. 

Spring Break felt like such a tease of summer! I put my laptop away...well for the most part and tried to leave all the stress at school. After traveling for 9 days I think I need a vacation from our vacation! We had such a blast together and I don't think anyone was ready to make the drive back to school on Sunday. We only have about 6 weeks left of school so there's light at the end of the tunnel! It's still crazy to me how fast our senior year seems to be wrapping up.

We made the never ending drive to the Palm Beach area (where Emory is from) on Friday afternoon and made it in late that night. We took advantage of the the two full days we were there and spent Saturday and Sunday exploring the area and showing it off to our two friends who had never been. It was my third time down there visiting and I fall more in love with it every time! I'm obsessed with the bright colors, WARM WEATHER, and the abundance of Lilly everywhere you look.  

There's still so many things I want to do down there so I think another trip down this summer is a must! 

After a sunny two days in South Florida, we hoped on our 4-day cruise to the Bahamas on Monday. We were a little unsure what to expect over all, but we all ended up having a blast. I think it's safe to say one of our favorite things about the whole ship was the food. I think we all agreed that we felt like we all gained 10 pounds by the end because every thing we ate was just so good. There were a few nights where we all ordered multiple desserts...and finished all of them. That's what vacation is for though right?! 

The boat was a majority of spring breakers and at times we felt like we were the only ones who didn't go to UGA, ha! So it was without a doubt quite the party. I'm not the craziest partier and some nights I would much prefer watching a movie in bed over any party but we still had a blast. 

We made two stops, one in Nassau and one on Royal Carribean's private island, Coco Cay. We got lucky and the weather was perfect on both days. It had been really windy the first night (I may have even gotten a bit sea sick) and the boat can't port at either place if the wind is too strong, but luckily the spring break gods were on our side and by the second day the sun came out and it was smooth sailing! 

We got off the boat on Friday and headed back north. We still had all day Friday and Saturday so we decided to make a pit stop and see my family in Hilton Head to break up the long drive. While it was a bit chillier there (note my very fashionable outfit LOL) it was still fun to show off one of my all time favorite places. My family has been visiting Hilton Head for decades now and holds a very special place in my heart. Every time I go back I fall more in love with the mossy trees and the small town charm. 

We got back in the car early Sunday morning to make it back to campus by mid-afternoon so we would have some time to tackle the mountain of homework that was awaiting our arrival. I have now 6 more weeks until the graduation festivities begin and the new phase begins! Until then it's more back to homework, classes, and meetings. Take me back to spring break!

What To Pack In Your Beach Bag

Although I've had to move around a lot due to my dad's job in the military, I've technically spent a majority of my life within a few miles of the beach. Im not great at lying around on the beach for hours (I get too bored!!) but I do enjoy fun beach days with friends and family.

When I lived on Camp Lejeune (a Marine Corps base in Jacksonville, NC) I could literally see the water from my bedroom window. At the time I didn't realize just how lucky we were to live so close to the beach until we moved away and I couldn't take quick trips to the beach at anytime. 

Since I'm on Spring Break right now and I know others are getting ready for their breaks, I thought I would share what I usually throw into my beach bag! If there's one thing that I hate it's being unprepared so I usually make sure I have everything and more before going anywhere. This is what I usually make sure is included in my beach bag!

Bathing Suits

It's hard to get into the spring mood when it's still 30 degrees outside buttt I've learned the hard way that when the stores come out with their bathing suits you should order them before they sell out. I'm really not a lover of bathing suits. I actually kind of hate them. I can never seem to find any that I like that are not showing too much, stylish, fun, and not an outrageous price.

I ordered a bunch of different options so I could try them on before we left and found a few that I liked. These were the ones that made my short list. This was also the first year I ordered a few one pieces to try and I actually kind of love them. I included a range of prices to fit everyone's price budget!

Add a few extra yays to that FriYAY and then you'll understand how happy I am for Friday to finally get here! 


School (okay mostly French class) has been a big challenge this semester so I am ready to cruise right into break. We should be in the car by lunch time and from then on out it's 10 hours of music, friends, and food!

My week primarily was spent in good ole' library (sometimes I wonder the collective number of hours I've spent in there), but I did have a great start to the week dancing the night away at the Bell Tower Ball on Saturday night and celebrating a roommate's 22nd birthday with Sunday brunch and ice cream. The rest of the week it was a safe bet that you could find me in the bottom right corner of the library (that's "my spot").

Thanks to everyone who weighed in last week on Instagram about which dress I should wear for the ball! I got so many responses and tried to respond to most of them. I ended up going with the black one with sequins. The only downside is the sequins aren't the most comfortable on your arms. Luckily I brought a sweater. After the ball I convinced Emory to go to Krispy Kreme for hot donuts...that may or may not have been my favorite part of the night!

As a Gilmore Girl FANATIC, I was pumped to read that Amy Sherman-Palladino (the creator and writer of Gilmore Girls) has a new show coming out!

Has anyone see the newish Disney movie Moana?! I could not stop watching this adorable video of this sweet little 4 year old singing a song from it.

Great Gifts For Your Besties

Does anyone else feel overwhelmed by the number of birthdays in the spring?! Maybe it's just because the majority of my friend group birthday's are in the spring semester, but suddenly it feels like we're celebrating a different birthday every single weekend! I'll use any excuse to celebrate though!

I think one of my dreams in life is to have a closet dedicated to gift wrap, bows, tissue paper, ribbon, a stash of pretty cards, and great gifts to always have on hand. I love giving gifts and I really try to find a meaningful and unique gift for my friends when their birthdays roll around. I am a true believer in big birthday celebrations and love any reason to celebrate my favorite people. 

It can be a challenge in college though when everyone always has a million things going on. This weekend we celebrated one of my roommate's 22nd birthday and we started off the morning by waking up early and going all out decorating our living room. I always keep a box of gift wrap, streamers, ribbons, and a birthday banner in my room for special days! We also ordered these fun balloons to take pictures with. 

Fun tip:: If you are having a lot of people over to celebrate another really easy way to make it special is to design and submit a snapchat filter. You can design your own on photoshop or illustrator or you can easily use one of snap chat's premade ones on their website and customize it with their name! No special skills needed at all! I made one for my other roommate's 21st birthday back in the fall and it was a huge hit. Since I wasn't home for my younger brother's 16th birthday this year I surprised him and made one for his school the day of his birthday! It was such a fun surprise and a fun way to make sure everyone knew it was his birthday. The best part, they're really cheap. You can buy it for just a few hours and usually range from $5-$25. Promise you'll be the coolest friend/ sibling ever.

After 3 1/2 years of college, I feel like we have done some really fun things for friend's birthdays. When you're living on a hall it can be even easier because you can get everyone to participate. I wrote a really great post a few years about how to make dorm birthdays special with a lot of great tips!

Finding the perfect gift for someone can be a challenge. I tried to include some out of the box ideas that could make your present unique. Greetabls are these fun new photo boxes I sent to my best friend and mom for Valentine's Day. They are paper boxes that you can fill with chocolates, confetti, candy, etc. and can customize with pictures and the pattern! They're pretty reasonable and a great alternative to a regular card. The photos also rip off so you can hang them up!

This Creative Lettering Journal would be perfect for a friend who loves pretty typography (aka me) or wants to learn calligraphy. It was designed by 2 ladies who have the prettiest hand writing. It walks you through all the letters of the alphabet and gives you tons of tips!

When in doubt, go with a fun experience! You can find tons on Groupon but things like breakout rooms, zipline excursions, scavenger hunts, segway tours are memorable gifts that you can do as a group to celebrate and can turn into a fun memory. I personally prefer a fun experience over a gift any day. One of my favorite birthdays was when my friends woke me up at 5am to watch the sunrise in one of my favorite places and video taped the whole thing! Best birthday ever. 

I hope this gave you some good ideas. I love gift giving and I'm still living for the day I can have a closet full of great gifts to give!
